AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Class

Give your puppy the best head start you can! This six-week course is for puppies of all breeds and mixes. They do not need to be AKC registered to enroll. Classes include: controlled walking, introduction to sit/down/stay commands, teaching to come when called, housebreaking, introduction to puppy agility, socialization with other pups and people, puppy care and behavioral problems.

"STAR" is an acronym for Socialization, Training, Activity, and a Responsible owner, all the things a puppy needs. AKC STAR Puppy is open to purebred and mixed breed dogs. Enrolling in the AKC STAR Puppy Program means the puppy will be listed in the AKC STAR puppy records. After passing a graduation test, puppies will receive:

1) A gorgeous gold Olympic-style medal with the AKC STAR puppy logo

2) A frameable AKC STAR puppy certificate

3) A 64-page booklet on what to expect during the first year, housetraining, crate training, and grooming tips are just some of the many topics

4) Discount enrollment in AKC Companion Animal Recovery

5) Subscription to AKC'S monthly email newsletter that includes training tips and other valuable information.

  • STAR classes are open to puppies five months and younger when the course begins. The application is required, as well as proof of the second series of vaccinations for parvo, para influenza and distemper.
  • Classes fill quickly. Because our classes are available on a first-come, first-served basis, we suggest that you submit your application as soon as you decide to take a class.
  • Family members are encouraged to watch the class, but only one of you can take your dog through the course.
  • For class, wear comfortable sports-type clothes that are easy to move in and enclosed sports shoes that won't slip, slide or come off your feet. For the puppy, bring whatever leashes you have and any collars you may own that fit her. No choke collars, no chain leashes, no retractable leashes. We do carry collars and leashes suitable for this class.
  • Bring lots of pea-sized soft treats. Chicken, hot dogs, cheese or soft dog treats cut into small pieces work well. Try to arrive 15-20 minutes early for your first class. Do not feed her at least four hours before class.

This six-class course is $75. Each class is 50 to 55 minutes each week.
