 PRACTICAL MANNERS

Do you want to learn how to make your dog a well-behaved member of your family without the competition-style exercises? Do you need to know things like how to keep your dog from bolting out the front door when you open it, or stop jumping on people, counter-surfing, or attacking the vacuum cleaner when you run it? Does your dog go crazy in the car when someone approaches? How are his table manners when you are eating?

If so, then Practical Manners is for you and your dog. This is a 7-week, team-taught class, that draws on the experience of four instructors. In addition to the problem behaviors mentioned above, we will focus on things like teaching your dog to walk without pulling, quit barking when told, socialize nicely with other people and dogs, and become a well-adjusted family member. We will also work on other problems on an “as-needed” basis.

Open to dogs aged 5 months and up, or younger if they have graduated from Puppy Kindergarten Class.

Look for this class on Mondays at 7 PM, beginning in mid-January.

The Dog Training Club of St. Petersburg offers occasional special clinics. Please monitor the class schedule or contact us for more information.

 Therapy Dog Classes!

Susan and Nira are giving a 7 week Therapy Dog preparedness class! The purpose of this class is not to learn how to pass the Therapy Dogs International evaluation, but to learn practical skills for handling various situations when visiting nursing homes, ALF's, and hospitals. We will also discuss the reading to dogs programs that are becoming more and more popular. Testing by a Therapy Dogs International evaluator will be held several times a year, but taking this course is not necessary for taking the TDI test. The AKC Canine Good Citizen test is part of the TDI test, so when you pass the TDI test, you will also pass your CGC test.  When your dog passes it's Therapy Dog International evaluation, he/she will become a registered and insured Therapy Dog. TDI is the largest Therapy Dog registration in America. Established in 1976, over 15,000 dogs have brought joy and comfort to those in need. In addition to visiting Nursing homes, Hospitals, and Assisted Living Facilities, they've attended to the emotional needs of displaced persons, family members & relief workers after the Oklahoma City Bombing, New York City after 9/11 and Louisiana after Katrina.

"The greatest benefit of all is the ability to make a difference in the lives of so many, by sharing their canine companions with those who no longer are able to have a dog of their own!"

BUDDY TRAINING

Buddy Training is a group training event.  You must be able to work independently, yet concurrently with other participants in the same ring space - assisting each other.  Ring space will be shared so your dog must be able to tolerate distractions such as tossed toys, fast-paced music, beeping metronomes, unusual and creative uses of equipment ... in a high traffic environment with high pressure.  Play trainning proofing techniques with audible and visual distractions equal to or greater to those found at a show site.  This is a great training opportunity for you and your dog.

This course is to prepare dog and student for Rally competition. Rally, the newest addition to AKC Companion Events, is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the Rally judge. The judge tells the handler to begin and the dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations (10 - 20 depending on the level). Each of these stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as formal obedience. Click Here For more information and rules for competition.

 FREESTYLE  (Offered Occasionally)

Do you love a challenge? Do you particularly love a challenge with your dogs?  Freestyle has just the challenge for you. Can your dog learn to do a suspended trot, a side step, heel on the right, or pivots on the fore and hind quarters? Can you choreograph all these elements into a fluid, compelling presentation to music which fits the rhythms of your dog? Your goal is to demonstrate your dog's grace, beauty, athleticism and training. You need only look to the precision and training of equine dressage to glimpse the possibilities.

Canine Freestyle is a choreographed performance with music, illustrating the training and joyful relationship of a dog and handler team.

Coming soon on Friday nights at 7PM with instructors Candace Battles and Nira Wissler. Please monitor the class schedule or contact us for more information.
